Chromosomal analysis of peripheral blood
Main indications – reasons:
- occurrence of a spontaneous miscarriage in a patient’s analysis
- sterility in a family, condition prior to IVF (in-vitro fertilization)
- physical developmental disorders, especially gynaecological ones, e.g. primary menstrual cycle disorder
- oocyte (a human egg) donor testing in an IVF program
- testing of both partners who have undergone cancer treatment before a planned pregnancy
Karyotype assessment:
- After a short (3-day) cultivation in cultivation cell containers in a thermostat cells are processed and a microscopical preparation is provided. Experienced medical staff uses microscopes to assess 1000-times magnified human chromosomes. Apart from the number of chromosomes (normally 46,XX for a female, 46,XY for a male) they also analyze up to 1100 light and dark blue stripes of various width in one human mitosis (a cell in a stage of division) according to the Paris nomenclature from 1995. By standard there are 10 to 20 of such cells assessed per patients, however, in case of deviation the number of cells assessed is up to 100 in order to get an accurate result.
